Mercantile volleyball teams will have two weeks to register for the third edition of the revived Mercantile Volleyball Tournament which the Mercantile Volleyball Association (MVA) has scheduled from August 16 at the Youth Centre in Maharagama. MVA stated that accepting applications will come to an end on July 31.

MVA officials expect around 100 teams, 70 in men and 30 in women, to compete this year. “After reviving the competition in 2012, after a pause of six years, the MVA came up with a two-tiered competition, namely the Super League and the Championship Trophies.

But with the improving number of entries, we thought the best is to introduce another category for the up and coming teams. It will be called the Division ‘A’,” explained Mangala Perera, the President of MVA.

The preliminary rounds of the tournament will be played during the third weekend of August, on 16 and 17, at the Youth Centre Indoor Complex in Maharagama. The final matches of the three categories will be played at the Sugathadasa Indoor Complex in Colombo on August 30.

“We intend to offer cash awards in all three categories worth of Rs. One million and we have made an estimate budget of Rs. 3.5 million as the total cost of the event.

We have ample time to finalise the sponsors and the initial stage of negotiations are now on,” Perera added.

The budget includes prize money, ground or venue fees, venue preparation fees, pre and post publicity cost, referees’ fees and related cost, food and accommodation and other expenses involved.

In addition to prize money the winners will receive championship trophies.

The tournament is organised with the prime objective of popularising the national sport within the mercantile sector, from where over 1200 players in both genders are expected take part in.

The winner of the Men’s Super League are guaranteed a cash reward of Rs.150,000 and a trophy while the winners of Women’s Super League and Men’s Championship will receive cash awards of Rs.100,000 each with trophies. Women’s champions will walk away with Rs. 80,000 in cash a trophy. The player-of-the-final in the Men’s Super League will receive a motor cycle.

The registration fee from a company will be Rs.6,000 and the team registration fee will Rs. 3,000 per team.
