“Plastic card debt trap”

Having read your news item under the above heading in the ‘Sunday Times’ BT Section of 15th instant, one can only sympathise with the card-holders who have embarked on spending sprees without giving a thought to the consequences awaiting them when the day of reckoning arrives. The plastic card facility is a trap that one walks into with eyes open.

Perhaps these spendthrifts should try adopting the simple strategy I came across in an article a few years ago on countering the urge to spend. The suggestion was to ask oneself three simple questions before making a purchase:

1. Do I want this?
2. Do I really need this?
3. Can I afford this?

Should the answer to any one of the questions be ‘No’, do not buy it?
