Intel’s Next Unit of Computing (NUC), launched in Sri Lanka recently, offers a “drastic” cost reduction compared to traditional desktop PCs, with the same functionality, according to the chipmaker’s Country Business Manager (Sri Lanka) Indika de Zoysa. This is because many components are built into the kit, such as wireless antenna, speakers, power, etc., while others like the fan are no longer necessary.

He also commented that this new ultra small 4-inch by 4-inch form factor kit, weighing just 460 grammes, has a starting price of US$ 200, for the board only. All of this also makes it “ideal solution” business deployments such as digital signage, kiosk displays vending machines, Point of Sale (POS), banks, entry-level servers for small businesses, etc. It can also be used as a home theatre PC, media servers or “personal cloud” storage.

Mr. de Zoysa also noted that with the new generation of processors being used, the NUC also offers a significant, 60 per cent power saving over traditional desktop PCs with the same features and levels of performance when it comes to video, immersive gaming, etc.
