It was a hair-raising journey down the ages. We saw it all- from how the tribal people dressed their hair to Grecian knots, French styles- powdered and bewigged, the Jazz Age, the elegance of Ascot and so much more. The added glamour of elaborate outfits, accessories, jewellery and body art created a dazzling spectacle.

Hair in all its glory, woven, braided and teased into the most amazing styles – that’s what ‘XXV by Johann’ brought to the catwalk on Tuesday, October 22 at the Grand Ballroom of the Colombo Hilton. The event marked the 25th year in the industry for hair stylist and beautician, Johann Peries.

The show began with a stunning dance act by the man himself, looking just as vibrant as the day he started out.

On the fashion front, it was Johann and friends as many of his colleagues in the industry presented the segments named Cults, Grandeur, Eras and Transitions and Showtime. Lou Ching Wong, Dharshi Keethisena, Michael Wijesuriya, Purnima Abeyratne, Chrysanthi Fernandopulle, Dhammika Amarasekera, Ruchira Karunaratne, Yolanda Aluwihare Holm, Damith Coorey, Channa Wijewardene all lent their creativity to the show.

Choreographed by Lou Ching Wong, the show saw around 120 amateur models take the ramp.

Johann is the owner of the ‘Cutting Station’, one of Colombo’s popular salons.

Speaking at the show, he thanked all those who made the event possible and his loved ones, most importantly his parents and siblings who constantly encouraged him and stood behind him. He also thanked his ‘fashion guru’, veteran beautician and hairstylist, Ramani Fernando.

All proceeds from the show will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, a charity that Johann and the Cutting Station support.

Familiar faces were also seen in the evening and the show had the presence of Veteran actress Veena Jayakody and many other veterans in the industry. The Opposition Leader, Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe and Mrs. Maithree Wickramasinghe were also witnesses to the splendid show by Johann.

Attire varying from the stone ages and then transcending to the Inca and the Mayan civilisation with the use of effects and lighting to create the atmosphere was impressive. The make up and vibrant colours used, had all eyes glued to the catwalk throughout the show.

The show was an assortment of eras as far as hair styles are concerned, from the disarranged Stone Age hairstyles to the modern day prim and proper hair dos.
