The Zaviyathul Ummul Fukara, a religious centre for Muslim women, will mark its 75th anniversary today at the Hall De Galle. The chief guest will be leading Muslim educationist Jezima Ismail, and the guest of honour will be Faizeena Samsudeen Markar, president of Colombo Ladies Zaviya.

Zaviyathul Ummul Fuqara had its humble beginnings in 1938. It was launched by a group of Muslim women deeply imbibed in the invocations and zikirs of the Shazuliya order on the advice of His Holiness Sheik Ibrahim Al Fassi Al Makki, the then head of the Shazuliya Order.

The group initially met at “Sea View” the residence of Haseena Maama Hanifa. As the number grew the group moved temporally to Bhajathul Ibrahimeeya Arabic College at 56, Church Street Galle Fort and later bought a building at No.77 Light House Street with the assistance of the members and benefactors. The Zaviya was ceremoniously opened on February 10, 1945. Sir Mohamed Macan Markar was the chief guest at the opening while His Holiness Seyyid Asheikh Jiffry Mowlana, the then head of the Qadiriya Tariqa also graced the occasion.
