Highest turnout in Northern Province

Voting at yesterday’s provincial council elections ended with a high turnout in the Northern and Central Provinces, while the North Western recorded a relatively lower turnout. Polling ended in a relatively peaceful manner with few or no incidents while the highest voter turnout of 68 per cent was registered in the Northern Province.

According to Government Agents, the voter turnout in the Wanni electoral district which comprises Mullaitivu, Mannar and Vavuniya, was 68 per cent while in the Jaffna electoral district which includes Kilinochchi the figure was around 66 per cent.
The second highest turnout was recorded in the Central Province with 65 per cent turn out in the Nuwara Eliya district, 60 in the Matale and the Kandy districts.

The lowest turnout was in the North-Western Province where both the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts had a turnout of 55 per cent.
