Chinese travellers spend more on international tourism than any other country and Sri Lanka is cashing in by implementing a mega promotional campaign to cater to their growing appetite for travel.

China is the world’s largest and fastest growing outbound tourism market and its travellers spent a record US$102 billion last year, up 37 per cent from 2011, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

Chinese travellers made 83 million outbound trips last year, up from 10 million in 2000, a growth the UNWTO credits to rapid urbanisation, rising disposable incomes and relaxation of foreign travel restrictions.

‘Sri Lanka Shines in Beijing’ a Rs. 150 million mega tourist promotion campaign aimed at attracting at least 200,000 Chinese by 2016 and around 50,000 by the end of this year has been concluded on a successful note last week, according to officials.

The number of Chinese tourists to Sri Lanka has been steadily growing.

Sri Lanka is now concentrating more on emerging markets like China and the Middle East while maintaining Western traditional and established markets, he added.

With a budget of Rs. 1.1 billion allocated for similar campaigns for the year, the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau is now conducting promotional events that would capture both the travel and trade markets as well as create awareness among the general public of the chosen cities about Sri Lanka and its facilities and services.

Tourism promotional campaigns are to be held in the Middle East and Korea as well as in Chinese cities of Shanghai next month and in Chendu.
