Curfew in Grandpass after attack on mosque

A police curfew was imposed in the Grandpass area in central Colombo last night till 7 a.m. today after a Muslim prayer room situated in a three-storied building came under attack by a group of unidentified persons. At least eight people including two policemen were injured in the attack, Police said last night.

Police riot squads along with commandos from the Special Task Force (STF) were guarding the property along Swarna Chaithiya Mawatha where tension prevailed after the attack.

Colombo Mayor A.J.M. Muzammil who arrived at the scene in a bid to ease the tension had to be escorted out of the area under police protection after restive crowds, many of them Muslims, jeered and attacked his vehicle. Several other politicians including Minister Mervin Silva and Deputy Minister Faizer Musthapa too visited the area.

Minister Rauff Hakeem rushed to Colombo last night from Kandy to take the matter up with government leaders.
