The Motor Traffic Department will soon introduce regulations enabling the Police to seize unroadworthy vehicles and produce them in courts and prevent the use of the vehicles until they are repaired, Deputy Inspector General of Police Amarasiri Senaratne told the Sunday Times.

He said under the regulation the Police jointly with officials of the Motor Traffic Department will carry out spot checks on vehicles on the road to check their roadworthiness and take action accordingly. “We will check a vehicle for brakes, lights, side-mirrors, condition of the body among other features,” he said.

He said that after a vehicle is produced in courts directions will be given to carry out the repairs before it is allowed to operate on the roads again.  “An analysis carried out shows that unroadworthy vehicles have also been one of the major causes for accidents,” he added.
Motor Traffic Commissioner General S.H.Harishchandra told the Sunday Times said the regulations are being introduced on the request of the Police.
