The picturesque Unawatuna beach is under threat and may even lose its position among the ten most beautiful beaches in the world, say residents. According to them, a man-made sea wall that is being constructed with huge boulders at the nearby Walle Devalaya, has triggered severe soil erosion in other areas.

Almost empty: Hotels used to 200 tourists daily are barely able to get even one

Destruction: Property on the beach has been washed away

Yaddehimulla Grama Sevaka Salinda Jayasekare said about 30 beach hotels have been partially washed away. N.L.Sumandasa (73), a senior resident from Yaddehimulla said that the charming coral reefs that have contributed immensely to the tourism industry are dying and have lost their colour due to the mud that is seeping through the stone wall.

“About 50 fishing families are affected by the sudden sea erosion. Despite the complaints they are going ahead with the construction,” he said. Hotel owner Neil Priyantha said about 200 tourists visited their hotels daily but now they are having trouble even getting one.
Another tourist hotel owner feared that this may even result in the Galle-Matara coastal road being washed away due to erosion.
