A woman was run over by the Badulla – Colombo train opposite the Kandy Courts Complex on Monday evening, while she was engaged in speaking on a cellular telephone. It could be counted as the one hundredth victim on this stretch of road, between the Getambe level crossing and the Kandy Courts Complex on William Gopallawa Mawatha

According to eye witnesses the victim, a middle aged woman, who remains unidentified due to the state of her body, had been dragged by the train for nearly three hundred feet. The driver of the train, an air-conditioned express, had been ‘tooting’ the horn from the bend near the Getambe level crossing, but to no avail.

According to railway authorities, if the brakes of the train which had thirteen carriages had been suddenly applied, a major disaster would have been caused to the speeding train.

There is a Court order, in a case heard in the Supreme Court, before former Chief Justice Sarath Nanda de Silva, that the authorities should take steps to erect a wire mesh along the area of the Kandy Courts Complex, to prevent people using the railway line or crossing the railway line to come to Courts, but so far nothing has been done, resulting in this type of tragedy recurring.
