Sri Lankans have been lured to spend money on their local hotels during holidays through some interesting marketing gimmicks to increase occupancies since this is mainly the off-peak season for overseas travellers.

Credit card packages and other attractive discounts were advertised in the media and on websites aimed at attracting more domestic travellers this season with offers of even 50 per cent off and some hotels providing stays ranging from Rs. 5,000 – 10,000 per head per night all inclusive with taxes.

Hoteliers Association President J. Kehelpannala said the domestic traveller has always been important for the resorts adding that these kinds of offers would entice locals to travel more within the country.

Hotels like Jetwing have continuously been giving discounts, the company said even in the past during the off-peak season in a bid to encourage more Sri Lankans to stay at their hotels.

This was mainly carried out to attract visitors during the long holidays and since it was a traditionally low month, the company noted.
Aureo Resorts CEO S. Anandaraj heading the Tangalle-based property Ranna 212 said they were now looking at getting in Sri Lankans and would have to go back to depending on them in a bid to increase occupancies.

Hotel chains are also reducing rates especially on Southern coast due to intense competition to attract more locals this season as less international travellers were visiting the country.
