Should SLC be more focussed on player behaviour?

Recent transgressions by our national cricketers have led to questions of whether SLC officials should place more emphasis on player behaviour and take measures to prevent more embarrassing incidents from occurring in the future. The Sunday Times took to the streets to discover the people’s views on the subject.

If you look at the 96 World Cup team under Arjuna, you never heard of any instances of bad behaviour. You need people to exert authority and be a good example. Officials don’t have any control over players anymore. - Dushantha Kularatne (Private sector employee)

Discipline is essential in cricket. You must practice discipline from the time you are small but sometimes when you get older you get more arrogant. I think these cricketers should get proper training from the time they are teenagers. This is the proper solution to this problem. - Hemantha Ranasinghe (Cricket coach)

Cricket is primarily about discipline so I think officials definitely should focus on it. When you go abroad you must be even more careful about your discipline than if you were playing in your own country. This even applies to newcomers to the team. They are the future of our cricket so they must learn to be good examples to children watching them. - Indika de Silva (Cricket Coach)

Officials should definitely look at fining or suspending players who have behaved badly. But at the same time you should also consider that they are under a lot of pressure and sometimes unfairly criticised. - Madushan Srimal (Student)

Cricketers should be made to understand that they are representing the country so they should behave with decorum. Cricket officials should advise them to follow whatever code of conduct there is and if it is breached then there should be consequences. - Melanie Bamunusinghe (Researcher)

It is the duty of officials to inculcate discipline. Before players go on any tour they should be told how to behave, what not to do and be given dire warnings if they go out of line. National cricketers should realise they are ambassadors and should act accordingly. - Nelson Mendis (Veteran cricket coach)

The biggest thing in sports is discipline. Officials should make it clear that if you are part of a team going abroad you are representing your country and when you are out of the country you must be even more disciplined. Any incident will affect the country’s image. - Pamoda Weerakody (Parent)

I think officials here are only concerned about profits and don’t care about players’ behaviour. The main problem now is that there is a lot of politics in the sport. - M. Rizwan (Private sector employee)

Talent and discipline both are very important and go hand-in-hand in cricket. So officials should impose penalties against players guilty of behaving badly. One player’s mistake will create a problem for the whole country so discipline is a must. - R. G. Tilak (Private sector employee)
