Former Sri Lanka opener Sidath Wettimuny, who was the first Sri Lankan to score a century at Lord’s, clinched the Group ‘A’ championship at the Mercedes Trophy Golf Championship which took place at the Eagles’ Links in China Bay, Trincomalee last weekend.

Wettimuny finished ahead of fellow sports personalities Arjun Fernando and Ivor Maharoof to win the top title.

The tournament had 72 players, playing in four handicap groups namely the Group ‘A’ Handicap of 0-12, Group ‘B’ Handicap of 13-20, Group ‘C’ Handicap of 21-24 and the Group ‘D’ Handicap for Ladies of 36.

Wettimuny, who was dominant with the bat during his cricketing career, proved unconquerable with the club too as he lit-up the Eagles’ Links, executing a fine array of strokes.

Captain Milinda Ratnayake won the Group ‘B’ championship finishing ahead of Sunil Udalagama and Eraj Gunaratne.

The Group ‘C’ championship was won by Prasanna Goonatilleke who finished before S. Jegatheeswaran and Ton Sinh Thanh.

The Group ‘D’ championship for women was won by Usha de Silva, who finished ahead of Niloo Jayathilake. In other individual awards, Kushal Johnpillai won the ‘Nearest to the Pin’ prize while the prize for the Longest Drive was won by Thusith Wijesinghe.

This tournament was organized by the Diesel and Motor Engineering (DIMO) and participation was exclusively for Mercedes-Benz, Jeep and Chrysler owners. Some Mercedes-Benz customers flew in and out of Trincomalee, while others came driving in their Mercedes-Benz cars. A Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van was used to transport golfers’ and their partners from the golf club to the hotel and back. The golf tournament started off at 7.00 a.m. on the 29th morning with a single gunshot.
