The son of remanded DIG Vaas Gunawardena is facing imminent arrest for his role in the abduction and murder of businessman Mohamed Shiyam.  Police spokesman SSP Buddhika Siriwardena said that the DIG’s son’s name had transpired during the investigation and hence moves were afoot to arrest him.

The CID had learnt from the other policemen arrested for complicity in the murder that they had picked up DIG Gunawardena’s son Ravindu and another PC armed with a T-56 automatic weapon and a pistol while they were on the way to commit the murder. The victim too had been in the vehicle at the time. Meanwhile the DIG who has been remanded till until June 25 was interdicted last Wednesday. He is now at the prison hospital undergoing medical attention for diabetes.

Meanwhile Police Spokesman SSP Siriwardena denied media reports that an inquiry has been initiated against ASP Shani Abeysekera chief investigating officer of the CID who is handling the case for leaking information to the media.

“There is no truth to these reports,” he said.
