Daya Master seeks SLFP nomination for NPC polls

The LTTE’s one-time spokesman Velautham Dayanidhi alias Daya Master was among 53 applicants interviewed by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party yesterday for nomination to contest the Northern Provincial Council election in September.

Among others interviewed were TNA Jaffna Municipal Councillor Remedius Mudiappu, Chavakachcheri UNP Pradeshiya Sabha member Kumar Sharvendran, top Jaffna  businessman Sathasivam Ramanadhan and Jaffna Fisheries Society Vice President Ponnambalam. SLFP Jaffna District chief organiser Angajan Ramanathan said that they had received more than 40 applications from the Jaffna District alone. The applicants included lawyers and businessman and the interview process would continue till the second week of July, he said.

The SLFP organiser said they were having talks with the EPDP of Minister Douglas Devananda, the SLMC, and the Sri Lanka National Congress of Minister Rishad Bathiudeen to accommodate their candidates also in the final list.

He said the SLFP and the EPDP had agreed to contest under the UPFA banner. The SLFP would field 12 candidates and the EPDP 24. The SLFP nomination board which interviewed the applicants yesterday included Ministers A.H.M. Fowzie, Susil Premjayantha, C.B.Ratnayaka and Mahindananda Aluthgamage. “We are excepting more TNA and UNP local council members to join the SLFP before the polls,” Mr. Fowzie said.
