A ceremonial sitting for newly promoted Supreme Court Judge Rohini Marasinghe Perera will take place on Wednesday. Ms. Perera, who was a Judge of the Court of Appeal, was promoted to the Supreme Court by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on April 26 to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice S.I. Imam.

She was the third-most senior Appeal Court judge, preceded by Justice. S. Sriskandrajah (President of the Court of Appeal) and Justice Sisira De Abrew.

Her promotion overlooking the President of the Court of Appeal spurred protests from the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL). However, the BASL said yesterday that it will attend the ceremonial sitting next week.
