With sky rocketing electricity tariffs by the CEB generating quite a bit of concern and discussion we asked our readers to send in their views on how their routine has changed (if any) with the increase in electricity prices. The following are some the comments we received

Grumbling and murmuring takes one nowhere! We at home curtail theextravagant usage of lights in rooms we are not using. That has kept our light bills to an affordable amount. We are all in an era of stringent living. So we as responsible citizens will be lessening the burden that’s been born by thedepartment. We even switch off the iron when it has sufficient heat left to iron a few more clothes!
When walking around the streets of Kandy I feel that there is a great amount of unnecessary burning of lights. Street lights are a must; yet there are many places that look over lit!Festive time calls for such lighting but certainly not on normal days.

Life has definitely changed. My mom is on a mission to switch off every unused light and limit usage to almost a single room. I can’t blame her though with the other expenses going up owing to the electricity prices being increased.

We’ve made a family pact to iron all our clothes together on a Sunday. We’ve stopped using the rice cooker and TV time has been limited too.

I feel this was inevitable, but now that it has occurred, it has made us realize the value of the things we use to take for granted. And I suppose in a deeper sense these rates are also a reflection of what is to come if we don’t look into investing in greener energy generation and reserves. The solar lights used along the Parliament road are a good initiative, we need more such initiatives in the future.
