They’re working for a cause and with material that’s endemic to war and the battle ground rather than the catwalk but these young designers are determined to make a fashion statement at ‘Camouflage: Fashion Frontline’, a charity fundraiser organised by the Viru Daru Movement in partnership with the Lanka Institute of Fashion Technology (LIFT) and supported by the Sri Lanka Army Seva Vanitha branch.

The fashion show is intended to raise funds for the Viru Daru organisation which focuses on the welfare of children of fallen heroes, soldiers currently serving in the army, retired soldiers and wounded soldiers. The funds will be used to provide scholarships to these children for their primary, secondary and tertiary education. It also helps students with special talents.

The base for ‘Camo’ was laid on February 2 this year when an eventful arts and craft workshop was held by children of the soldiers at the Seva Vanitha Unit in Narahenpita under the theme Camouflage. Their art work is what inspired around 40 LIFT student designers to develop this collection of over 100 designs. They have also taken as their themes the natural beauty of the north, the forests, beaches and landscapes as well as the country’s rich cultural heritage. Models will be volunteers working alongside professional models, all trained by veteran Lou Ching Wong. Hair dressing and make-up will be done by Salon Ramzi.

“The camouflage print is something we grew up with as children of army officers,” says Chief Coordinator of the Viru Daru movement, Malindu Udawatte. “This is a new concept we are working with. Our members will be working with professional designers and some designers are doing an avant garde collection out of the camouflage material as well. This is a show where fashion meets activism.”
“Camouflage: Fashion’s Front line” will be held on April 29 from 7 p.m. onwards at the Sri Lanka Convention and Exhibition Centre. Tickets, priced at Rs. 1500 are available at LIFT at Horton Place, Seva Vanitha Army Branch at Army headquarters, Origins at Ward Place, Glamours at Dehiwala, Salon Ramzi at Borella and Lakviru Sevana at Battaramulla.
