Three students who had allegedly defaced the lion’s paw (sinha padaya) of Sigiriya with Tamil and English letters and names were arrested by the Sigiriya Police on Friday.
The police took in for questioning two males and a female student from a school in Maskeliya and released them with a warning.
Using rocks and bricks, the students had carved out over 25 names on the historic monument.
Central Cultural Fund Manager Chandana Weerasinghe, said this is one of the most serious damages caused to the sinha padaya in recent times.
The Archaeology Department Director stated that he was shocked by the news and requested the conduct of an immediate inquiry into the incident. Further investigations will be conducted with regard to the security guards who were on duty near the monument at the time of the incident.
