An on-going 1.7 billion rupee sewerage project that cuts through Ratmalana and Moratuwa areas has caused walls of houses in the vicinity to crack and left foundations of many houses broken. The damage caused to homes is a result of construction work on the sewerage system with the use of heavy equipment.

The project aims to link the sewage disposal outlets to a main pipeline. The project is being implemented by the Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB). Residents complained their protests regarding damage caused to their houses and broken foundations are yet to receive attention from the authorities.

Nilanka Heenatimulla, a resident from the area said complaints were made to the Water Board. “We were told an inquiry will be held. “We did not hear from them, we have still not been compensated despite our houses being on the verge of collapse,” she said. Residents also complain the project is a failure as sewerage lines of a number of houses have not been connected to the pipeline which empties into the sea.
