AG to directly indict Tangalle murder suspects in High Court

The Attorney General (AG) will directly indict in the High Court, the suspects charged with the killing of UK national Khuram Shaikh and the rape of his companion on December 25, 2011, in Tangalle, the External Affairs Ministry said.
The direct indictment will be served under the provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure (Special Provisions) Act passed by Parliament recently.
This law allows for non-summery proceedings in connection with several serious criminal acts such as murder, to be indicted directly in the High Court, by foregoing the magisterial inquiry.
Former chairman of the Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha, Sampath Chandrapushpa Vidanapathirana and six other suspects in the 2011 killing of Mr. Shaikh, are on bail since last November.
British MP Simon Danczuk, along with Naseer Shaikh, brother of the late Khuram Shaikh, were in Colombo last week, to raise concerns about the delay in trying the suspects in the murder.
