Dharmapala dominate Battle of the Golden Lions

Dharmapala Panniptiya dominated the day two proceedings of the 2nd Battle of the Golden Lions big match against traditional rivals Rahula Matara as it ended in a draw at De Zoysa Stadium in Moratuwa yesterday.

Rahula rode on a stubborn knock from Shehan Kahandugoda who put up a stiff resistance to save his side from an obvious defeat. Shehan who was unbeaten on 28 at the end of the first day’s play when Rahula were struggling on 59 for 5, came to his side’s rescue by cracking an unbeaten 80 comprising of 12 boundaries during the morning session. His stubborn knock helped Rahula reach 140 before being bowled out just after lunch.

This came in reply to Dharmapala’s first innings total of 233 which they made on day one with Himasha Liyanage making a top score of 66. Dharmapala batting the second time went for quick runs and only succeeded in losing wickets at regular intervals before ultimately declaring at 109 for 8 in 26 overs.

Rahula who were set a target of 203 runs to win in 25 overs, which was a daunting task, reached 52 for 5 at close of play.

The four individual awards were shared by the two sides. Rahula’s Shehan Kahandugoda and Mayura Galappaththi carried away the

best batsman and bowler awards while Dharmapala’s Himasha Liyanage carried away the best fielder and man of the match awards.
