Sri Lanka Tourismwas scheduled to kick off this week a tourism promotion campaign in India starting in Bangalore in a bid to attract more travellers from the neighbouring nation that currently is ranked as producing the highest arrivals.

The two day promotion from February 21-22 would be one of the first promotions initiated by Sri Lanka Tourism with all expenses paid by the authority with the participation of 60 travel agents, tour operators and hoteliers.

The mega promotion was held in one of Bangalore’s leading malls promoting Sri Lanka with the intention of attracting travellers from all segments of the market for leisure, incentives, corporate travel and meetings.

The industry believes the promotion would assist in boosting the country’s prospects as the Indian market is more productive for city hoteliers, Sri Lanka City Hoteliers Association President K. Shanthikumar told the Business Times.

He noted that currently they were attracting the mid and upper market of the Indian travellers and most were likely to stay in city hotels as they were not keen on spending a number of days in the mountains or with nature.

The key attraction for this market is the shopping and the casinos and night life, it was pointed out.Sri Lanka is targeting an increase in growth by at least 20-25 per cent this year from its Indian travellers while aiming to attract 1.2 million in total.
