The country’s first ever rugby competition between private higher education institutes, the Informatics Rugby Sevens, is all set for its inaugural touchdown, as the tournament’s participating teams stand prepared for a series of riveting battles at the CR and FC grounds today, beginning at 8.30 a.m..

The sides that will be in action, apart from hosts Informatics’ educational arm, the Informatics Institute of Technology, are Achievers, ACBT, the ICBT Colombo and Kandy campuses, APIIT, CINEC, SLIIT, IIHE and SAITM. Teams have been drawn into two groups with the top two institutes from each proceeding directly into the competition’s semifinals. Those unable to remain in contention for the main Cup can still salvage some glory and silverware in the Bowl and Shield finals.

Veteran rugby referee and Tournament Director, Dilroy Fernando, said that he expected the tournament, which he said was the first of its kind, to produce some clean, hard rugby between teams that boast a bevy of talented players, who have at one point reresented leading schools in Sri Lanka.

The Rugby Sevens is part of Informatics’ 2013 Sports Fiesta, which comprises a host of sporting events such as cricket, basketball, table tennis and badminton tournaments which will be staged to mark the group’s 30th anniversary.
