The Sri Lanka Army’s first intake of female Tamil soldiers visited Colombo on Friday and met university undergraduates and students at the Presidential Secretariat. The visit is part of a programme to familiarise new Army recruits from the North with the South.

The visit was organised under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, under the direct supervision of the Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Army headquarters said.

Interaction between university students and Tamil female soldiers comes under the “Sisu Diriya National Programme.” The programme focuses on developing positive thinking, team spirit, knowledge through discussion, aesthetic skills and leadership talents, and connecting with the outside world.

Among those present at the occasion were Presidential Additional Secretary Ranjith Wijethilaka; Nandana Wijesinghe, Director, Presidential Social Affairs Development; Brigadier M. Mudannayaka, officials of the Presidential Secretariat, senior security forces officials and university officials. This is the first of many visits to the South for Army personnel based in the North.
