Multimedia – A growing area for high paying jobs!

View(s):

According to a recent survey conducted by the Bureau of Labour Statistics, USA, there are several fast-growing occupations requiring only a Diploma, vocational training, or on the job training that offer moderate to high earning potential. Multimedia is at the top of the list.

As global competition places new pressures on businesses, many companies are raising the bar on the requirements for new hires.Rather than offering on-the-job training in multimedia technologies and practices, companies are requiring validated skill sets so that new employees are ready to hit the ground running when they walk in the door. In addition, companies are now requiring that existing employees receive additional training in key multimedia skill areas to meet new business and departmental objectives.

There is growing emphasis on animated films and TV commercials. This includes not just the big hits by companies like Pixar but also shorter animated films used for commercial, education and entertainment. Some of the most sought after careers in graphic design & multimedia can be found in web design companies that attempt to design appealing and user friendly interfaces for online promotion and transactions.

Creativity and Technology are two sides of the same coin, which are tested at SAITM, at its faculty of ICT and Media, allowing their own students to embark on new disciplines based on IT.

The South Asian institute of Technology & Medicine (SAITM) was built upon Founder & Chairman – Dr. Neville Fernando’s quest to open up these new avenues of opportunity, to fulfil the aspirations of today’s talented youth.

SAITM places a high emphasis on bringing out the true calibre of their students, while keeping intact cultural values within them, and contributing towards a GREEN campus – setting a noteworthy precedent.

The Faculty of ICT & Media is one of four faculties at SAITM. All SAITM labs are equipped with modern computers, especially 24 inch iMac computers. These facilities were also commended by Ms. Stella Power of EDEXCEL, who verified the EDEXCEL HND Programme in Interactive Media.

Utilizing fibre optics technology for high speed internet access from SLT, a campus wide Wi-Fi facility is available for students in the campus to access their course work outside the laboratories. All student assignments, submissions as well as a fully fledged Student Information System (Enables teachers to track student performance online) are on electronic media – emphasizing on a truly ‘Green’ themed campus.

TVEC certified Multimedia Diploma

For schools leavers and students who have just completed your O/Ls or new comers towards Multimedia, SAITM offers a 6 months Diploma programme covering tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver as well as disciplines such as video editing, sound editing, web design and graphic design. This programme is registered at The Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development of Sri Lanka.

Internationally Certified Multimedia and Computing Degrees

For the first time in Sri Lanka, a degree programme from the Bucks New University (BNU) UK is offered at SAITM. Namely; B.Sc. in Computing with Interactive Media. SAITM also offers a BSc in Computing. Students who have completed HNDs elsewhere are also eligible for certain exemptions. Both these programmes can be completed fully in Sri Lanka at SAITM.

The Cost Benefit

Generally a three year UK degree would cost few millions to complete overseas. It would cost more than a million even to complete in Sri Lanka. But, at SAITM because of the initiative by their Chairman, students are able to complete a three year programme for about Rs. 750,000/-

Hands on Training Courses

An essential part of SAITM’s education is the focus on hands-on training. Since SAITM concentrates on a smaller number of students to train, in-depth training courses are held by reputed industry establishments.

Unique laboratory facilities at the campus are regularly offered to these institutions to conduct many training programmes on New Media and Video Editing Courses. Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation was also offered their facilities in the recent past on the same lines.

Student Care beyond Coursework

Students need to be constantly guided and driven to excel in their studies, but they also need to be paid attention, in order to ensure that they are mentally prepared to grasp knowledge. Counsellors are constantly at hand to advice students, just as lecturers monitor progress of students to ensure that they follow a pathway they are passionate about. This is the main reason that classes are limited to 30 students – a rare instance at present.

The Lecture Panel consists of skilled and highly qualified personnel who place a keen focus on a higher level of hands-on learning, while the industrial experience of these individuals is a very distinct feature. They are well trained to give students the clearest possible insight into their chosen pathway, while aptly coaching them.

SAITM welcome parents and students to visit their picturesque campus at Malabe to witness the facilities yourself. You may also visit their stall during Edex Exhibition from 18th to 20th this month at BMICH Stall No.83 (Hall A).
