Sri Lankan travellers to Singapore increased by about six per cent last year, a reason for its tourism board to campaign in Colombo to attract more visitors with its all-new experiences.

Singapore Tourism Board South Asia Area Director G.B. Srithar speaking with the Business Times this week said they were in Colombo in a bid to re-engage with the travel industry and re-introduce Singapore as it has become a destination of continued interest to Sri Lankans. He noted that 2011 was a record year since Sri Lankans totalled 84, 000 from its total visitors that was a six per cent rise from the previous year. Singapore keeps expanding and has introduced more fascinating wonders to behold its visitors with an all new Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Cruise Centre and Marine Life Park and is host to one of the world’s largest aquarium, he explained.
In addition more attractions are on offer with an adventure cove of wild and wet experience, a River Safari, which is considered to be the world’s largest river theme.

Another unique attraction of Singapore’s wildlife is the two pandas from China, said to be wide-eyed named Kaikai and Jiajia.
Coming to Singapore again would add to the experience already obtained since today visitors would get the opportunity of viewing more and have a bigger experience, Mr. Srithar said.

He explained that Sri Lankans enjoy being with nature and to view animals in close proximity in addition to the flora and fauna and that Singapore has everything to offer on all these fronts.

Shopping on Orchard Road has improved; he said adding that today it is a more a holistic experience that one could avail themselves to. The biggest challenge however, is that it is price sensitive; he noted for a destination that offers an experience to the discerning traveler.

Singapore has been visited by 13.2 million people globally last year and this year the figure is set to reach 13.5 million, he said. The country’s top three markets are Indonesia, China and India.

Currently, the Singapore Tourism Board has plans of offering an attractive experience and in this regard has partnered with Singapore Airlines and local travel agents.

Singapore authorities are also engaged in promotional campaigns in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Kolkata.
