Sri Lanka Telecom-subsidiary Mobitel recently launched an Iinternet service for state-sector employees. Called “Upahara Internet”, this product is an extension to a similarily named post-paid package which was first launched in 2008.

According to a media statement by the celco; “Upahara Internet now offers dongles free-of-charge to all existing Upahara customers who are state sector employees. The monthly rental on this package, offered with an attractive data bundle is only Rs. 299″. Further, quoted in the media statement, company Chief Executive Lalith De Silva commented; “Mobitel has always dedicated itself towards supporting the Government in its efforts to develop ICT in Sri Lanka. We have already established several IT centres at grass-root levels, emphasising our efforts in taking ICT to even the most remote areas.

We have been successful at providing network coverage to many areas which are not yet under the purview of any other mobile service company in the country… Just as the Mobitel Upahara service became an economic relief for these employees, this Internet package will definitely help them to further enhance their knowledge and also encourage them to be more digitally savvy”.
