“What would you do without a cell-phone on a deserted island?” Cell or mobile phones (for better or for worse) has become an important part of the lifestyles of people.

While there are tremendous advantages and users cannot do without it, there is also a need to create awareness on the safe use of these phones taking into account the health and environmental aspects. With this in mind, the Sunday Times Business Club is focusing on this issue with a panel discussion titled “Mobile phones, its safe use, health and environmental aspects of telecommunication towers”. The event is on Thursday, October 25, 2012 at 6.30 pm at the Taj Samudra hotel, the host hotel of the club. The main sponsor of the club is Etisalat with Hameedia as a co-sponsor. The panellists represent four relevant sectors: Regulation- Dharmasiri De Alwis, Director , Projects -TRC, Service provider (Lakshitha Wijesinghe, Product Manager – Corporate Solutions and Devices, Etisalat); Vendor (representing Nokia– Sujeewa Karunasekera, CEO Softlogic Communications) and a health specialist, Dr Raveen Hanwella. With some 18 million phones in circulation in Sri Lanka, the discussion will centre on the increasing use of cellphones in our daily lives and how, in its use, one could minimize any health hazards/dangers, etc.
