Temperatures in some parts of Sri Lanka rose to a record high in three decades this week with Vavuniya and Polonnaruwa recording 40 degrees Celsius.  The Meteorology Department’s Duty Meteorologist, Jeewan Karunaratne, said Vavuniya recorded 40.1 degrees Celsius while the temperature in Polonnaruwa District reached  40 degrees Celsius after fluctuating between 38.8 and 38.9 degrees during the early part of this week.

“The warm weather will continue for a few days in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Vavuniya, Trincomalee and Batticaloa,” he said.
Temperatures in the hill country rose slightly with the highest temperature reported from Kandy being 32.6 degrees Celsius. The average temperature in Colombo this week was 31 degrees Celsius and Galle 30 degrees Celsius.

However, the department forecasts intermittent rains in the last week of October. “With the onset of the inter-monsoon period there will be rain accompanied by thunder and lightning,” Mr. Karunaratne said urging the public to take precautions.
