Specialist raises questions regarding quality of imported drugs

One of Sri Lanka’s most highly qualified pharmacists said yesterday there were vital issues that needed to be addressed regarding the quality of medicinal drugs being imported, the quality testing of the drugs and good manufacturing practices.
Dr. Titus de Silva, who qualified in pharmacology in Britain and was the first head of the National Drug Quality Assurance Laboratory set up by the late Professor Senaka Bibile in 1970, said a Govt. directive for the air conditioning of pharmacies was not the solution to this problem.

He said that because of the issues regarding the quality of the drugs, many of them might have already lost their efficacy by the time they were brought to the Colombo port, after the long procedure and subsequently taken to the drug companies in containers. The temperature in containers is generally known to be higher than 35 degrees celsius.

Dr. de Silva said Pharmacy Services needed to advance to the 21st century to provide better patient care and added there needed to be more competency in good manufacturing practices (GMP) inspection.

His comments came while patients rights groups were campaigning for the implementation of a National Medicinal Drugs Policy (NMDP) intended to provide quality drugs to people at affordable prices.
