Mount Royal Hantane : Mysterious haven in hills

‘Hantane’ in Kandy is considered as one of the most beautiful locations in the Kandyan region.Apart from its geographical and historical values, Hantane has earned the name as one of Sri Lanka’s top tourist destinations.

It was declared as an environmental protection area in February 2010 under the National Environment Act and the home for many flora and fauna, endemic to Sri Lanka. The height point of the range is 3800 feet tall Uura Kanda. The range is a favourite destination among the mountain hikers and trekkers in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s one and only Tea Museum is too situated on the mid way to the top along with many tourist accommodations in this beautiful landscape.The latest addition to the location is Mount Royal Hotel Hantane. Situated in Uduwala in Hantane towards the eastern slope of the range, Mount Royal has unique Scottish architectural touch.

The Hotel has ten tastefully designed rooms. Two are family rooms, where eight people can be accommodated. The rest are double rooms with upper deck, where the beds and extra rest-room are located.

‘The hotel was opened in last April for nature loving public. It has situated in the highly protected environment. So we always encourage guests to respect the surroundings’ said Anura Eriyagama, the MD of Royal Garden Hotels and Royal Garden Holdings (Private) Limited.

Mount Royal Hotel, Hantane offers a tranquil and relaxing holiday with all modern amenities.‘We didn’t get any professional architectural advice during the construction. Its traditional Scottish designed was created by Tissa Liyanapatabendi, who was inspired by century old Scottish architect to the dreams of his son Bimsara Liyanapatabendi. This is his brain child’ explained Anura about the creation of the hotel.

The hotel has beautifully created dining area with a view of Hantane West slope, where it has the capacity for nearly 75 pax.

Traditional puband Bavarian style beer garden at the elevated level is the top attraction of the hotel.
‘We always cater to Sri Lankan clientele. Our menu is also traditionally Sri Lankan, but with any kind of cuisine on board. Our chefs are capable of handling any request for India, Chinese, Continental to Far Eastern dishes’ said Anton Dissanayake, the Manager of the Mount Royal Hotel.

The hotel has special package for honeymooners. ‘This is an ideal hideaway for honeymooners. We have special dining menu for them including candle lit dinner at any location they, desire with decorated rooms’ said Anton.

Mount Royal is a base for adventure lovers, who like to do the excursion around the region. The Hantane Rock and mountains offers endless trails for walks and trekking and the nearby forest reserve offers the nature lover the rare opportunity to mingle with nature.

It is just 40 minutes drive to the Kandy City, Peradeniya, Udawatta Kele, Maligawa, Polgolla and Rajawella Golf Links are in close approximity.

‘We also encourage small functions such as, corporate functions, private parties, seminars, cocktails and other gigs’ Anton added.
