Prashan Kumarasamy, 27, the prime suspect involved in the alleged murder of his own family members, is believed to have planned this crime for over a month. According to police, a month ago, he befriended a pharmacist from whom he obtained the antidepressants, allegedly used for mixing in drinks, to kill his family members.

A heavy spender, Prashan who worked as a medical representative in Colombo, is believed to be heavily in debt for millions, and debt said to be the motive behind the crime, following his parents refusal to comply with his request for funds, according to police.

Police investigations reveal that, Prashan has been living in Colombo for over a year, in a small rented annex. Four days before the killing, he had brought his family members from his native town Kotagala, to Wellawatte, purportedly, to acquaint them with his bride-to-be. Even during his sojourn in Kotagala, the suspect is said to have borrowed jewellery from a friend and sold it in Colombo.

However, according to his statement to the police, Prashan claims that, along with his family members, he too partook of the antidepressant tablets, believed to have caused the death of his family members.

But, the suspect seems to have escaped death and decamped with his mother’s and sister’s jewellery. That night he had stayed at a hotel, and for the next couple of days, had been moving around in Colombo, after having sold the jewellery to a private bank for Rs 500,000, and finally, ended up in Kotagala.

Once the bodies were discovered, and the police intensified their search for him, he was constantly on the move. Police were able to intercept his mails which also contained a suicide note from him, addressed to a friend.

He had also, reportedly, been on the verge of giving himself up to the Wellawatte Police on Friday (24), but subsequently, changed his mind. Later, while boarding a bus to Kadawatha from Fort, one of his friends had spotted him and alerted the police, who finally caught him.

According to police, the suspect is now undergoing medical tests and is to be produced in court. The decomposed bodies of the suspect Prashan Kumarasamy’s father Kumarasamy (58), mother Poovathy (56) and sister Amita Priya (25), were found by a relative of the family, Nicholas Jebamalai, who, on calling over at the house, found the doors locked and a foul smell emanating from within. He had immediately summoned the police who broke into the house.
