Become an Early Childhood/ Secondary Education Teacher with Waiariki Institute of Technology - New Zealand

The Overseas Student Centre, Nugegoda which is always at the forefront in advising students and parents on different study options in Australia, New Zealand & Malaysia in partnership with Australian Migration Centre “The Leading Migration Agency in Sri Lanka”, has decided to provide Sri Lankan students & parents an exclusive opportunity to talk to the Head of Department - Ruth Barnes of Waiairiki Institute of Technology by organizing one-to-one consultation sessions on Monday,2nd  April 2012 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at the Overseas student Centre, 5/6, Railway Avenue, Nugegoda.

Established in 1978, Waiariki is one of the largest tertiary institutes outside the university centres. Originally developed as a centre for adult and trades education, Waiariki has been offering quality vocational studies for 30 years. It has a student population of around 9,000 full- and part-time students, of which 200 of these are from overseas. Waiariki began to offer bachelor degree programmes in the early 1990s.Waiariki Institute of Technology has strong links to local and national training and governmental bodies ensuring students obtain relevant and job-ready qualifications when they graduate.

Early childhood education in New Zealand caters for children aged 0 to 5 years old and  is made made up of a range of centre types such as full day care for working parents  to sessional kindergartens.  Early childhood teachers are in short supply in New Zealand and are highly valued professionals. New Zealand trained early childhood teachers are recognised internationaly as the best in the world.
The Early Childhood programs offered at the Waiariki Institute varies from the Diploma Level to the Graduate Diploma. Moreover, the programs offered at the Waiariki Institute are recognised at The University of Canterbury as well. The university offers two teaching qualifications via its University of Canterbury Rotorua Centre, based at Waiariki Institute of Technology.

Bachelor of Teaching Early Childhood Education degree starts in July 2012 preparing student teachers for teaching in the early childhood sector in New Zealand. This qualification enables graduates to apply to the New Zealand Teachers Council to register as a teacher in New Zealand on completion.
On completion of the Early Childhood Program, you can also aim for careers such as secondary school teachers, special education teacher, teacher of English to speakers of other languages (ESOL), dance, drama, music, or visual art teacher, education advisor, education officer, educational psychologist, review officer, school principal and tertiary lecturer.

New Zealand has an international reputation as a provider of quality education. It has a progressive education system with many state of the art facilities. It offers a safe learning environment with excellent study opportunities and support services for international students. Courses are available for academic, professional and vocational studies at New Zealand institutions - universities, polytechnics and institutes of technology, colleges of education, secondary schools and private training establishments. New Zealand higher education has 10 levels of study with level 1 being a certificate and level 10 a doctoral degree. International students can read for courses from level 5 and above. Each level is progressive in terms of complexity and difficulty.

Post study work
Students who complete a course of study are able to work in New Zealand full time for 3 years after completion of their course. Students are also able to apply for permanent residency (PR) if they satisfy the required amount of points. Students interested in applying for PR in New Zealand are able to choose from a course of study in the absolute and immediate skill shortages in New Zealand which will get them bonus points.
