Inter Act wants actors

‘Inter Act Art’ an academy to promote theatre and arts has invited newcomers interested in theatre to work in its latest two plays.

Produced by M. Safeer and Aruna Priyantha, anyone above 18 years of age and speak either Sinhala or Tamil can apply to work in these productions. Those selected from an interview will be given an opportunity to undergo an internationally standard modern theatre and drama workshop. Thereafter they will be able to work with productions and festivals and workshops organized by the Inter Act Art.

Pregnant man in town

Film, television and stage drama actor Sriyantha Mendis’s comedy play ‘Gabbara Minisa (Pregnant Man) will go on boards in Colombo and Negombo. The play will be staged at 3.30 and 6.45 p.m. on May 29 at Rukmanidevi Memorial Theater Negombo and at Maradana Elphinstone theatre on June 3.

The play with a host of popular actors including Sarath Kothalawela, Wasantha Vittachchi, Malkanthi Jaysinghe, Sujeewa Priyalal, Mihiri Priyangani, Kusum Renu and Sriyantha himself is an adoption of Ajith Mendis from the book written by W. S. Wijesinghe.

Music by professional music director Anthony Surendra while popular Derana dream star Upeka Nirmani will render her voice for background singing. This drama is choreographed by senior lecturer Ariyarathne Kaluaarachchi, Wasantha Vittachchis will do make-up and Nipuni Mindiss will contribute with costume designing. Stage lighting by Upali Weerasinghe, stage management by Himashi Vithanage and Sameera Hettiarachchi with the assistance of Neil Ravindra and stage settings will be by Luvolin Vandawall.

Gabbara Minisa’ is presented and organized by Jude Srimal and tickets for the Negombo show are available at Minal Digital Colour Lab and Rukmani Devi Theater while tickets for Elphinstone Theater are available at Sarasavi Book shop Nugegoda. Sadeepa Book shop Borella and Elphinstone theatre.

‘Naribena with Jasaya and Lenchina’

Dayananda Gunawardena’s darama ‘Naribena with Jasaya Saha Lenchina’ will be staged at 3.30 p.m. and 6.45 p.m. on Saturday June 4 at the Maradana Elphinstone Theatre.

This entertaining play features Rodney Warnakula, Bandula Wijeweera, Sarath Kulanga, Gayani Prabuddika, Rathnasheela Perera, Jayanath Bandara, Saman Gunawardena, Sunil Thilakarathna, Wasantha Gunawardena and Indika Jayasinghe.

Behind the scenes, costumes by Airangani Gunawardena, choreography by Rohana Baddage with the main organizer of the show being Jude Srimal. Tickets are available at Sarasavi Book shop Nugegoda, Sadeepa Book shop Borella and Elphinstone theatre.

Con artistes on avenging mission

Winner of seven Academy Awards and a box-office hit in 1973, ‘The Sting’ will be screened at 6 pm on May 24 at the American Center, Galle Road, Colombo 3. A perfect reunion for director George Roy Hill and stars Paul Newman and Robert Redford, the film won Oscars for Best Picture, Director and Screenplay.

Set in 1936, the movie’s about a pair of Chicago con artists (Newman and Redford) who find themselves in a high-stakes game against the master of all cheating mobsters (Robert Shaw) when they set out to avenge the murder of a mutual friend and partner. Using a bogus bookie joint as a front for their con of all cons, the two feel the heat from the Chicago Mob on one side and encroaching police on the other. But in a plot that contains more twists than a treacherous mountain road, the ultimate scam is pulled off with consummate style and panache.

American Werewolf in Paris

Romantic thriller ‘An American Werewolf in Paris’ directed by A. Waller will be screened at 3 pm on Tuesday, May 24 and at 6.30 pm on Wednesday, May 25 at the Alliance Francaise de Colombo.
The story goes as; Andy and his two friends are on vacation in Paris and trying to beat each other in one stunt or another.

While trying to bungee jump off of the Eiffel Tower, Andy runs into Serafine, an apparently suicidal young woman. After literally falling for her, Andy hunts down the woman of his dreams only to realize that it is him who is being hunted. He’s bitten by a large animal which makes Andy to become closer to Serafine than he could ever imagine, and in Paris, a new creature stalks the night.
