By Sanath Weerasuriya

Kandy is a year round place for tourists visiting Sri Lanka. Apart from traditional attractions like Maligawa, Botanical Gardens, Kandy Lake and Udawatta Kele, there are many new places have come since lately.
Attractions may change from time to time, but traditions will live last long. Hotel Suisse is just a classic example for old world charm.

This 150 years old colonial Hotel, rising amidst three acres of landscaped splendour, is ideally located right beside the historic ‘Kandy Lake’.

Hotel Suisse, a pre-World War II guest house and once used as a garrison for British soldiers, is the last strong hold of the ancient Sinhala Kings. Yet amazingly, it is but a few minutes walk to the city center and other places of tourist and historic interest.

Designed to cater exclusively to the holiday makers and leisure travellers, the hotel has 93 breathtaking many old traditional style large rooms including six suites and mini suites.

The hotel is now under going a series of refurbishment programmes. ‘Mainly because of the huge inflow of tourists at present and the Bradby and Perehera season, we are doing this renovation project step by step’ said Ranjan Peiris, the General Manager of the Hotel.

The first phase of the extension and renovation programme completed was the construction of a new shopping arcade, thirty five additional rooms, expansion of public areas, installation of an ultra modern lift, complete modernization of the main kitchen and installation of telephones in all guest rooms. The proposed second stage which concentrated on the rooms and bathrooms and at the same time preserved the colonial atmosphere of the Hotel was completed, and the Food and Beverage outlets too were given a face lift.

‘All this designated to add to the standards and facilities of the most fastidious individual, who demands nothing less than the very best. That’s why we have a good repeat market’ he added. The hotel takes pride in the gourmet food, prepared by the hotel’s experienced chefs and well loved by the guests who come from all over the world.

Hotel Suisse is the ideal base to visit many adventurous and historical sites such as centuries old Buddhist Temples and devals (Degaldoruwa, Gadaladeniya, Ambekke, Dodanwala Natha Devalaya etc), the elephant orphanage in Pinnawala, Victoria, Randenigala reservoirs , historic Mahiyangana, Ambuluwawa, Tea Museum in Hantane and of course the popular Knuckles Range.
‘We arrange excursions for all adventure lovers on request. Even Udawatta Kele is more adventurous than some known places’ Ranjan said.

Hotel Suisse operates under the management of Galle Face Hotel Management (GFHMC)
‘Hotel Suisse is considered as one of the best properties under the GFHM Company and the Chairman Sanjeewa Gardiner is taking keen interest of this property. He always guides and encourage in doing things with this hotel’ Ranjan said.
