900 JPs before polls

Justice Minister Milinda Moragoda appointed more than 900 Justices of the Peace (JPs) on the eve of the dissolution of Parliament and their names were gazetted on Friday.

The appointments are dated February 9, 2010, the day Parliament was dissolved, and were made by the Minister under the powers vested in him under the Judicature Act.

At least 250 of those appointed have been made All Island JPs while the rest are for different Judicial Zones in the country.
