Cottage of beauty goes up in a blaze

By Shelton Hettiarachchi

One of Nuwara Eliya’s best-loved cottages -- more than 125 years old and used by the British colonialists -- was destroyed in a fire last afternoon, Police said.

The fire spread through the beautiful ‘Keena Cottage’ rapidly as most rooms were made of wood. More than 75 percent of the cottage was completely burnt along with antique furniture and the library. The fire brigade of the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council and hundreds of people made efforts to save the cottage, but failed.

The cottage was the official residence of the Assistant Government Agent during the British period and at present is owned by one-time Health Minister Siva Obeysekara.
Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
