A play on worthlessness of wealth

‘Olu’, ‘Chathurya’ and ‘Hendewa’ famed director Shirley P. Delankawalage’s latest teledrama, ‘Degammediyawa’ woven around importance of human values compared to the wealth and power will be telecast from Sunday, July 13 at 8.30 pm belt on Swarnavahini channel.

Starring Vasanthi Chathurani, Cletus Mendis, Bimal Jayakody, Lakskman Mendis, Suraj Mapa, Udayanthi Kulatunga, Paboda Sandeepani, Nuwan Kulasekara, Roshan Ravindra, Wathika Ravinath, Tekla Kumudu Kumari, Mahendra Weeraratne, Gayan Lakruwan, Kaushalya Samarasinghe and Kanchanamala Mahavithana in the main cast, the play highlights how the good and the bad that goes together in two separate settings, the village and the town.

The teledrama revolves around Wimale, who goes to town following the untimely death of his father. He becomes a helper to a mason and falls in love with Sachithra, a girl from a family which provide meals to the workers in the building site. Soon Wimale gets married to Sachithra and returns to the village with her but the setting is not suited for the new bride who was brought up in an urban background. Wimale and Sachithra go back to the town and Sachithra leaves for a job in the Middle East. This leads to the break up of Wimale’s family.

Meanwhile Sirimal, Wimale’s younger brother takes up the responsibilities of fatherless family. He looks after his mother Rathu Hamine and younger sister Indira. However they are too worried about the future of Sirimal who sacrifices his future for the sake of the family.

While Wimale in the urban setting runs after the money and wealth, Sirimal in the village represents the epitome of selfless love and goodwill. Who will be the winner of these two extremes? Awaits the lat episode of ‘Degammediyawa’.

Based on a story by Kande Dickman, ‘Degammediyawa’ is scripted by Pushpakumara Ellawela. Chandana Jayasinghe is the cameraman and Buddhika Ranasinghe is the editor, Manoj Wickremasinghe art director and Priyantha S. Wanninayake handles the make up while Kasun Kalhara is responsible for musical score.
