STC go out favourites

By M. Shamil Amit
The battle to reach the final showdown of the Milo All Island Division 1A schools rugby knockout tournament will get underway today at the Royal Sports Complex ground in Reid Avenue. The first of the semi final clash will be between hot favourites for the knockout plum S. Thomas’ led by Shaveen Kapuwatte and St Anthony’s led Amila Weligampola. The second semi final will be contested by Isipathana led by Niroshan Fernando and Wesley guided by Azward Aniff scheduled to be played at the same venue tomorrow.
Shaveen Kapuwatte (S.Thomas' Capt) Amila Weligampola (St Anthony's Capt).

The clash between Thora and Eagles is going to be an interesting one. The scales are in favour of a Thora win due to the fact that they recorded a convincing 52-25 win when the two met in the league encounter played in early June.

But even then the Eagles cannot be taken lightly as they have been a completely different side since recently. Though they came to form there are doubts whether they could prevent the strong S. Thomas’ making a repeat performance.

If STC prevail today it will be their third appearance in the final of the Milo schools knockout tournament having earlier made it to the final in the year 2000 and 2003 losing to Kingswood on both occasions in the final while for the Eagles it will be their first.
