DESMOND & DEZMOND – Gearing up to Rock Colombo

By Sanath Weerasuriya

Desmond de Silva and Dezmond Rodrigo, the dynamic entertaining duo of the 70’s popularly known as Mohammed Ali and Bruce Lee in Sri Lankan showbiz, will come alive together after 30 years specially for their ardent fans of theirs.

sDesmond de Silva (now living in UK) and Dezmond Rodrigo (now living in USA) would take centre stage at BMICH on July 24 for a one off concert assisted by Sunil Perera, A.E. Manoharan (now living in India), Mariazelle and Ginger.

The presenter, Rajiv Sebastian from ‘Rajiv & the Clan’ fame who presented the historic sell out concert ‘The Legends of Sri Lankan Pop’ last November, vowed to provide music, drama and humor at this event. De Silva, who is well known for his all time hits ‘Yanna Rata Wate’, ‘Chuda Manike’, ‘Mamma No’, ‘Polkatu Henda’, ‘Yaman Bando’ etc. will join A.E. Manoharan on a brand new duet called ‘Kalakata Passe’, which talks about the man from Jaffna meeting his Sinhala friend from Matara and how they feel about life after the bitter war concluded recently after 3 decades.

The hilarious Sunil Perera of the Gypsies, who generally questions the public with his hit song ‘I Don’t Know Why’, will be in for a shocking interview filled with strictly confidential questions by Dezmond Rodrigo by way of song, would be a rare experience for the audience.

Dezmond Rodrigo along with his mega hits ‘Bruce Lee’, ‘Nagala Yanawa’, ‘Peththappu’, ‘Wedimura Thiyala’, ‘Baila Bazaar’ is billed to perform duets with Mariazelle and Ginger, before he teams up with his counterpart to perform ‘Double Decker Bus Eka’, another original composed by Rajiv Sebastian which would expose more or less the autobiography of the fiery duo before the curtains come down.

Being a fan and a close friend of both Desmonds, Rajiv is confident of having another spectacular full house at BMICH and has had frequent conversations over the phone with the duo in getting the repertoire to a perfect blend of old and new hits. Both de Silva and Rodrigo who are well known for their stage acts are also involved in two sing-along style medleys containing their popular hits.

Rajiv, who is recognized as ‘The Concept Factory’ for his creative skills among the music loving public, has got in to a habit of limiting himself for one annual concert.

He is in charge of the music arrangements where his Clan, will handle the backing and emcee Vijaya Corea, who introduced the two rioters in their hey days would be around to do the honours. Who knows? This star studded musical extravaganza filled with fun, dance and glamour may even be the unannounced farewell for the two Desmonds.
