First post-war military casualty

A soldier was shot dead and two were injured in a shootout with an LTTE cadre at Kirankulam in Batticaloa early yesterday, military sources said.

This was the first killing of a soldier since the LTTE was militarily defeated in May. The sources said the LTTE cadre was moving in a boat from Kokkadicholai to Kirankulam through the Batticaloa lagoon when he was ambushed by the soldiers.

The LTTE cadre had grabbed a weapon of a soldier and opened fire killing a solider and injuring two. The LTTE cadre, identified as Mohan, was injured in the shootout and is in custody.

Meanwhile, a school principal and another person were shot dead at Bharathipuram in Vavuniya yesterday by an unknown group.
