Emerging markets are Nokia’s next growth area

By Lakshman Gunatillake

Singapore -- Nokia’s next phase of growth is to be very much driven by the emerging Asian markets including Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Vietnam. Many of the population from these markets are accessing the Internet, information, education, and entertainment on their first mobile.

Nokia is playing a pivotal role in this transformation, according to Chris Carr, Vice President of Sales in South East Asia Pacific region SEAP, speaking at a glittering innauguration ceremony of the annual Nokia Connection 2009 in Singapore recently . The event was held at the Raffles City Convention Centre
At this event, Nokia demonstrated its commitment to harness the power of the Internet and mobility to deliver compelling services and solutions to consumers. Nokia announced a number of devices with solutions that can be personalised to connect people in new and better ways. According to industry estimates, Nokia has already reached the four billion mobile connections milestone globally early this year.

Delivering the keynote address at the inauguration ceremony of the event, Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer Mary McDowell said, "The Asia Pacific market has been an extremely important region for Nokia over the years. Asian consumers' eagerness to use technology makes this region a great place to introduce new devices and services. Singapore and many of its Southeast Asian neighbours represented here today will be among the first to take advantage of the future solutions Nokia intends to bring as we connect the planet so that everyone can participate,"

Nokia also unveiled three new handsets--the E72, 5530 XpressMusic and 3710 fold--at the annual Nokia Connection 2009. Starting with the Eseries, the E72 is modeled after the E71 with a full QWERTY keyboard, but comes with an optical navigation key, upgraded 5-megapixel camera and 3.5mm audio jack. Letting users plug in standard headphones sans an adapter is quickly becoming a standard feature on the E series, smart phones. It also has dedicated buttons to activate the Bluetooth and torch function on the bottommost row of the keyboard, resulting in a smaller spacebar.
