Chathurika’s challenging role

By Susitha R. Fernando

Young and talented actress Chathurika Peiris plays her maiden role of producer in ‘Sihina Kumari’, a mega teleplay telecast every weekday.

Joining Roshan Pilapitiya and Jayantha Peiries, Chathurika co-produced 135-episode teledrama is being shown at 7.27 pm on Rupavahini from Monday to Friday. Having played in some popular films like ‘Hiripoda Wessa’, ‘Machan’ and ‘Nildiya Yahana’ and a large number of teleplays, the actress-turned producer shared her experience in her new role to the TV Times.

TVT: What do you think about your new role as a producer?

Chathurika: This is a production done together with Roshan Pilapitiya and my father Jayantha Peiris. Since we wanted to do a quality mega serial teledrama with about 135 episodes, it was really a hard and time consuming work. Unless a proper preplanning was done it would have been impossible.

TVT: As an actress what were the advantages you had as a producer?

Chathurika: Since we are familiar and face with practical difficulties due to inadequate facilities and proper environment, we were able to minimize some of the difficulties experienced by the actors and actresses. At times we were handicapped of giving good performance due to lack of background sets
For example sometimes we were given a role of rich and well-to-do character minus other facilities needed for them. This makes difficult for an actor.

TVT: What differs this teleplay to other productions?

Chathurika: Unlike the ordinary teledramas there are a lot of action scenes in this teledrama. There are even fighting scenes done using stunt artistes like Tyronne Michael, Kumara Ranepura, Teddy Vidyalankara and Saman Weerasiri. In addition we have an art department with a large number of artistes. And we could have easily gone to nearly 300 episodes with this story but we made it a point to finish it with 135 episodes. This was done mainly to maintain the artistic quality.
