Mendis will represent all CEOs at ICC meeting

By S.R. Pathiravithana
Duleep Mendis
Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lanka Cricket Duleep Mendis has been invited for third consecutive year to represent the CEO fraternity of the International Cricket Conference at the annual meeting of the ICC Cricket Committee which will be held in London on 11 and 12 May.

Mendis who has been involved in the game of cricket in almost all imaginable capacities such as School cricketer, Club Cricket, Club Captain, National Player, National Captain, National coach, team manager and the head of the National selection Committee is by far the most exposed to cricket at the highest level among the ICC CEOs.

Explaining about the tasks at hand Mendis explained to The Sunday Times that “Generally at the ICC Cricket Committee meeting we discuss all matters pertaining to the technical aspects on and off the field. For instance one of the main subjects will be the review of the Umpire referral system which has now been tried out in three series so far.

It was first used in Sri Lanka and then subsequently used in a series involving England vs the West Indies and the South Africa vs Australia series. Initially it was three referrals-a-side but it was subsequently brought down to two considering the time factor. However at this meeting the Cricket Committee will take a final decision how the referral system is going to be implemented or whether it will be implemented at all.”

The Lankan CEO also followed it up by saying “Besides that we will also discuss matters pertaining to the playing conditions, Umpiring, Match Refereeing, new concepts, T20 cricket etc. We will also take up for discussion some matters that come within our purview on subjects that were taken up for discussion at the last ICC Directors meeting.

This forum will be chaired by former West Indian captain and ICC match referee Clive Lloyd.
Another distinction for Sri Lanka here is that besides Mendis there will be two other Sri Lankans featured at this prestigious meeting. They are – Sri Lanka’s newly appointed Captain Kumar Sangakkara and former Sri Lanka captain and head of the ICC Match Referees Ranjan Madugalle.

All decisions taken at this meeting will be forwarded to the ICC Chief Executives’ Committee on its future employment or otherwise.
