Horse racing starts off with Governor’s Cup tomorrow

The festival season in Nuwara Eliya is back again and all roads will lead to the racing track in Nuwara Eliya from tomorrow when first of the five days of horse racing meets scheduled to get underway.

The horse races organized by the Sri Lanka Turf Club (SLTC) will get into action on this day with eight races due to be held and the main event of the day being the much looked forward to and prestigious Governor’s Cup. The Governor’s Cup this year is sponsored by Mobitel Telecom Ltd who is coming forward to lend their hand on a big scale for the first time.

In between the events there will be a battle for the George Steuarts sponsored Queens Cup and also the fight for other trophies namely Mackwoods Labukalle Cup, Sumathi Cup, Sporting Times trophy and SAC Shums Cup.

Another feature of the day will be the tie for the Grand Hotel Cup sponsored by SLTC themselves in appreciation to Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya for their services rendered through the year.

The newly elected President of SLTC Gamini Jayaratne along with committee Raj Weeraratne (Secretary), Anuka Soza (Treasurer) and the experienced horse racing specialist Rajan Sellamuttu are leaving no stoned unturned to make the happenings a resounding success.

Sri Lanka’s little England which Nuwara Eliya is popularly known as will see thirty thoroughbreds of high quality being saddled and fought out for honours by local and Indian jockeys for the glittering trophies that are on offer.

According to an official of the SLTC this year promises to be the best of them all with the participation of more thoroughbreds than the previous events and also with new horse owners getting into the fray.
The thousand of spectators who are expected to throng the racing track to witness the colourful events will also be rewarded. The organizers will be presenting gifts to a contest named the best filly (ladies), best stallion (gents) and the best hat (ladies) which will be selected by an independent panel who will be on the move amidst the crowd.

The Nuwara Eliya horse racing festival will come to an end on April 18 with the Sunquick Cup for Class I sponsored by Scan Industries who in addition will also be sponsoring the day’s proceedings.
