SAF gold winning athlete Ranga Wimalawansa who is already indicted at the Colombo Magistrate Courts on a human smuggling charge now also has been charged at the High Courts on charges of plotting to murder or extort Rs 600,000/- from a person.

The charge against Wimalawansa is on August 8, 2008 that he and some others have threatened to kill Sampath Abeysinghe and taken Rs 600,000/-.

Earlier Abeysinghe had applied for a visa to enter England to join his wife who is already there. However the British High Commission had rejected the application. While Abeysinghe was walking away from the High Commission premises he had met a three wheel driver by the name Kapuru Bandarage Don Susantha who has subsequently introduced Wimalawansa claiming that the latter could obtain a visa for him. There after Wimalawansa had taken the above sum from Abeysinghe in this regards.

However Abeysinghe learning that this was not going to be a legal visa had wanted the money back. At this point Wimalawansa had asked Abeysinghe to meet him near one of the supermarkets in Colombo.
During this meeting police constable named Nihal Jayantha attached to the President’s security division had come dressed like a high official of the police force and pretended to take Wimalawansa into custody.

At that point Abeysinghe had fled from the scene. Later on learning that this staged act was also a hoax Abeysinghe had made a police complain.
