Four new Deputy Governors of the Central Bank

The Monetary Board of the Central Bank (CB) this week announced that it has promoted four Assistant Governors -- Ms. Rose Cooray, K.G.D.D.Dheerasinghe, Dr. Uthum Herat and Dr. D.S.Wijesinghe to the post of Deputy Governor with effect from March 13, May 23, May 27 and July 7, respectively.

These promotions have been made in line with the succession plan of the Bank and to address the new challenges of the Central Bank, the CB said in a statement, confirming a report in The Sunday Times last week.

The report said Ms Cooray, who was appointed to a newly-created post of Deputy Governor (a third position from two currently), is due to retire in around May 2009 and would be replaced by Mr Dheerasinghe (currently serving as Sri Lanka's Alternate Director at the IMF). It also reported that Dr Ranee Jayamaha is retiring as Deputy Governor in May and will be replaced by Dr Herat. Senior-most Deputy Governor W.A. Wijewardene retires in July and his position will be filled by Dr Wijesinghe.
