Forum on Next Generation Network will attract BPO operators here

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization will organize a Forum on Next Generation Network Standardization (NGN) starting Tuesday in Colombo, which will help Sri Lanka to attract BPO operators to the country, according to the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC).

Priyantha Kariyapperuma, Director General told The Sunday Times FT that the objectives of this 3-day forum are to discuss the current trends, status and future evolution of NGN technology and standardization. He said this forum will also let the delegates share the experiences of NGN architecture, design, development and deployment. In particular, topics to be addressed are NGN management and control, technologies, NGN migration, number portability, security, policy, authentication and regulatory issues, interconnection and interoperability. “This is a platform to showcase the capabilities we possess in business process outsourcing (BPO) as this BPO industry is based on connectivity. This connectivity factor can be enhanced with NGN,” he said.

He said the sessions at the forum will additionally focus on cybersecurity, ICTs and climate change, traffic accounting principles etc. “There will be discussion of policy, regulatory and developmental issues related to NGNs and a report on the main results of the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly,” he added. He also said that by leveraging on the experiences of renowned experts in the ICT field, the conference aims to allow participants to explore a wide spectrum of NGN standardization and related topics, with a special focus on the Asia-Pacific region.

Mr Kariyapperuma also noted that Sri Lanka will showcase that it is an intelligent market where the telecom giants can conduct their research. “There are four million mobile subscribers here with five mobile operators and four fixed operators, which shows that we are an intelligent market,” he said.
